The Grocery Gateway story begins with a family. After immigrating from Sicily, Italy, the Longo’s opened their first store on Yonge Street at Castlefield in 1956. Eight family members worked at the store which they opened to fulfill a single vision: provide customers exceptional quality, service and value.
From the beginning, Tommy, Joe and Gus Longo focused on hand-selected fruits and vegetables that traveled from farm to table as quickly as possible. Relationships with local farmers that could provide the freshest, highest quality produce were formed with a simple handshake. Even then, home delivery orders represented nearly 40% of their business. Customers would phone in their order, a family member would hand-select the products, carefully pack them and deliver in a rumbling old truck.
Today, Longo’s remains a family-owned-and-operated business delivering their original vision of exceeding customer expectations by offering the best food experience how customers want it: whether at a traditional Longo’s store, The Market by Longo’s, or on Grocery Gateway. Now 29 stores in the Greater Toronto Area, a cornerstone of their growth and success has been innovation. In the 1990s, responding to the needs of increasingly time-starved families, Longo’s launched Freshness-to-Go, offering phone or fax grocery orders with quick in-store pickup. Well-received by customers, this program was soon replaced by the Longo's next step in dedicated customer service, Grocery Gateway.
Adding Grocery Gateway to the Family.
When Longo’s acquired Grocery Gateway in 2004, it was a natural extension of the personalized service that they had built their reputation on. The Longo’s revisited their roots of home delivery, this time offering a fresh take with online ordering.
Today, Grocery Gateway is Canada’s largest online grocery delivery service. As one of the first online grocers in North America, we’re also the most experienced. The original rumbling Longo truck is now a fleet that delivers across the Greater Toronto Area and beyond to Hamilton, Guelph and Stouffville. Your personal shopper packs your order with care and our delivery team brings your groceries right to your kitchen table. Our goal is innovative, friendly service that brings you good food and makes your weekly shopping easy.
