One of Longo’s most successful partnerships is with Miles Farms of Waterford, ON, where they’re serious about corn. They currently grow over 800 acres of sweet corn, and have been providing Longo’s with it for over 30 years. “It’s become more like working with your family than it is a business,” farmer Kevin Miles says of the partnership.
Kevin cites southern Ontario’s soil conditions for the sweet corn they produce. Once it’s ready to be harvested, the corn is washed, cooled, packed and shipped out within 24 hours to ensure maximum freshness.
John Fiorino, category manager for produce, is constantly sourcing produce for Longo’s and strives for as much locally-grown fare as possible, making Miles Farms a solid choice. “I only buy what I would serve my own family,” he says.
Besides providing customers with the freshest vegetables, Kevin notes that buying local produce is good for the environment and helps support the local economy. John echoes the sentiments, noting Longo’s pledge to source locally-grown produce first, when in-season. Longo’s also keeps a smaller, local veggie inventory and orders more frequently in order to provide customers with only the freshest. And with Miles Farms only being an hour away, “you can’t get much fresher than that.”
