Longo’s is proud to be partnered with Strawberry Thyme Farms of Simcoe, ON. A fellow family-run business, Strawberry Thyme has been owned and operated by manager John Cooper’s family since 1951. Now in their third generation of farmers, Strawberry Thyme has earned the reputation of “one of those top quality growers.”
Strawberry Thyme only grows what are known as ever-bearing strawberries. They’re known to grow well in a limited amount of space and produce a four months’ supply of strawberries! The Cooper family will plant their ever-bearing strawberry seeds in September and they’ll bloom in the spring, usually June. A particularly good crop will produce strawberries until October.
The beauty of partnering with local farmers is that Longo’s “can get product from the field to stores in a very short amount of time,” says Tim Gibson, Longo’s category manager for produce. The crew at Strawberry Thyme works so efficiently, they can have product on store shelves the day after it’s been picked. Now that’s fresh!
Tim also notes that customers often request Ontario-grown products. That’s why 75 to 80 per cent of all Longo’s produce sold in the summer months is grown locally. Don’t forget about dessert – Ontario strawberries can also be found in the bakery department being used in some of the most decadent desserts. Strawberry shortcake, anyone?
One of the reasons this partnership has been so successful is the shared values between Longo’s and Strawberry Thyme. John says Strawberry Thyme Farms’ experience working with Longo’s “reminds us a lot of our outlook here…where it’s a family-run operation, with good, honest people who are trying to do their best on a day-in, day-out basis.”
